Understanding Flow Meters

July 24, 2024

At NutraDrip, we ensure every drip irrigation system we install is equipped with a reliable flow meter. For our Midwest growers, these devices are crucial for monitoring and reporting water usage. Let’s dive into the details of our commonly used flow meter model and its importance.

Why Flow Meters Matter

Flow meters are essential for several reasons:

  1. Accurate Water Usage Tracking: They help monitor the amount of water being used, which is critical for efficient irrigation and compliance with state regulations.

  1. State Reporting: Accurate readings are required for annual water reports mandated by state agencies.

The Netafim WST Flow Meter

Our go-to model is the Netafim WST flow meter. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Design: Typically, a red steel device, available in various diameters to match the size of your irrigation system.

  • Display: The register or display device shows two lines of numbers

  • Top Line (Totalizer): Total amount of water pumped.

  • Bottom Line: Gallons per minute (GPM) when water is flowing.

  • Measurement Units: Most registers display in gallons, but some use acre feet (AF). Conversion is required for reporting purposes.

  • Certification: These devices are certified by state agencies for accuracy, making them suitable for official water usage reports.

Inside the Flow Meter

  • Paddle Mechanism: Inside, a paddle or small fan turns with water flow. This mechanism is magnetically connected to the register, ensuring no direct contact between water and the register.

  • Maintenance: If the register stops working, it can be replaced without shutting off the system. If debris like gravel gets stuck, you can remove the four bolts to clean the inside components. Ensure the water is off before doing this.

Anti-Tampering Measures

  • Tamper-Proof Cable: A cable on the side of the register prevents tampering. This is important for states like Kansas and Nebraska, where strict water usage regulations are enforced. If the register needs replacement, a certified process ensures accurate reporting.

Alternative Flow Meter Options

While the Netafim WST is our most common choice, we also use AquaTeev flow meters for some systems. The AquaTeev model has no moving parts and features a neck-down body, offering a different solution for water measurement.

Conclusion

Flow meters are vital for efficient irrigation management and compliance with water usage regulations. At NutraDrip, we prioritize accuracy and reliability in our flow meter installations to support our Midwest growers.
